"What is art activism?"
Art activism, in it's simplest terms, is a form of activism expressed through art. It is used to spread a message. Art activism is the idea that you can make a statement with your creative outlets.
Activist art can communicate solutions to conflict, or call attention to causes the creatives find important for the viewer to know. Like words, art is extremely powerful.
"Examples of art activism:"
You can see art activism all over the world, for many different causes. The classic signpost form of protest is a form of art activism.
A topic you've probably seen a lot recently is art calling for a ceasefire for Palestine. The art community has helped spread the message of the Palestinian suffering far and wide. Here are some examples of contemporary art pieces dedicated to Palestine's conflict:
However, art activism has been a form of activism for many, many years. The right for women to vote, for the legalization of lgbtq marriage, black and brown equal rights movements, land back movements, environmentalist movements, and calls for ceasefire all have art activist history.
Why is does it exist and why is it important?"
Sometimes, art activism is the best way for someone to spread their message meaningfully. Art is worth a thousand words, and is an extremely powerful form of expression. Many people that can't be on the front lines of conflict are able to spread news about a cause through their artwork, whether it be in galleries, protests, or online.
Art is also an important empathetic tool. Getting someone to appreciate a piece of artwork for it's beauty can lead to that person empathizing with it's creator and what it was created to convey.
"How can you participate in art activism?"Simply create art about something that you're passionate about, something that really drives you. If you want to spread a message, draw or write it out. And most importantly, let other people see what you've made! Spread your message to those around you.
